Defellrath's art installation Wellenkreis in Lugano

"Wellenkreis", an endless sine curve in real space. The geometric sine curve is represented in a two-dimensional space. In this sculpture it becomes three-dimensional, materialized as a swinging line in space made of black-blue iron. The forging traces are still perceivable. This form is mathematically impossible: the sine curve in not a continuous line anymore, but becomes is itself returning.
It should symbolize harmonical relations in the broadest sense: communication and consensus, community and sound.
It is a blue iron wave circle composed by 135 laser cut wave sections, with a diameter of 10 meters, and a weight of 110 kilograms, which was exhibited floating in the courtyard of the magnificent New Palace of Tettnang, during the International Bodensee Festival 2000.
Later, I created a smaller version of "Wellenkreis" 5 meters in diameter, composed by 123 courves. I believe the ideal environment to exhibit it would be the classic "white box" exhibition space, often found in museums. Visitors would enter into a completely white room and be confronted with this sculpture, which would appear to be floating at about 2 meters height. They could view it from it's center, move around, feel the primordial energy it radiates....
